The formulas behind the calculator

  • Outer size = inside size + flute height (length, width and height)
  • Deckle (reel size) = ((OD width + 2 + OD height) x 2) + trim margin
  • Cutting size = (OD length x 2) + (OD width x 2) + stitching flap + 5
  • Boards = order quantity / ups; running length (m) = cutting size x boards / 1,000
  • Effective GSM = GSM x (1 + take-up % / 100) for a fluted layer; liners use their GSM
  • Layer weight (kg) = deckle x cutting size x effective GSM x boards / 1,000,000,000

These are the defaults of a regular slotted carton in the Tejaxo ERP Process Plan. The full step-by-step explanation, with a 5-ply and a 3-ply worked example, is in our guide: corrugated box paper weight calculation. Check that the deckle does not exceed the maximum reel width of your corrugator, and add your standard wastage before issuing paper.

From calculation to job card

In Tejaxo ERP for packaging, this calculation is kept once per customer and product in a Process Plan. When an order arrives, the Job Card turns it into a paper request for each layer with standard wastage, paper is issued against the job, and production is recorded stage by stage – corrugation, printing, stitching or gluing, bundling and dispatch – with rejection and downtime by reason. Questions about corrugated box calculations

Outer size = inside size + flute height. Deckle = ((outer width + 2 + outer height) x 2) + trim margin; cutting size = (outer length x 2) + (outer width x 2) + stitching flap + 5; boards = quantity / ups. Each layer weighs deckle x cutting size x effective GSM x boards / 1,000,000,000 kg, where effective GSM = GSM x (1 + take-up % / 100).

Use the value your corrugator actually achieves for that flute profile. As an example, a plant may use about 41% for B flute, 48% for C flute and 55% for A flute; the calculator lets you change it per layer.

Because the fluted paper is corrugated into waves, it uses more paper than the flat board it forms. That extra is the take-up percentage.

No. It gives the net paper for the order. Add your standard wastage percentage for start-up, trim and rejection when you issue paper to the job.

They are the defaults used in the Tejaxo ERP Process Plan for a regular slotted carton. Allowances such as the trim margin and stitching flap differ between plants, so they are inputs here.

Yes. A Process Plan per customer and product holds the box design and the paper for every layer; the Job Card turns it into a paper request for the job quantity with standard wastage, and production is recorded stage by stage.
