How the OEE calculation works

Planned production time = shift length – planned breaks. Run time = planned production time – downtime.

  • Availability = run time / planned production time
  • Performance = (ideal cycle time x total pieces) / run time
  • Quality = good pieces / total pieces
  • OEE = availability x performance x quality, which is the same as good pieces x ideal cycle time / planned production time

A full worked example for a CNC machine, the six big losses and the common mistakes are explained in our guide: How to calculate OEE. To capture OEE automatically from production entries and machines, see machine data and OEE in the ERP and Tejaxo Automation. Questions about OEE

OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality. Availability is run time divided by planned production time, performance is ideal cycle time x total count divided by run time, and quality is good count divided by total count.

Around 85% is often quoted as world class for discrete manufacturing, but most plants start lower. Track the trend for each machine and fix the lowest of the three factors first.

The ideal cycle time entered is slower than the machine really runs. Use the best rate the machine has actually achieved.

Utilisation shows how much of the shift the machine ran. OEE shows how much of the planned time produced good parts at full speed, so it also counts slow running and rejects.

Yes. In Tejaxo ERP, OEE is captured from production entries with downtime and rejection reasons, and CNC / VMC machines can send cycle counts, run and idle time straight into the ERP.

Measure OEE on every machine, every shift
